Cynthia gave a little of her background a couple of weeks ago, so I’ll give a little of mine and how I got here. My mom had me at a young age and before I was born, my biological father left her and me. Most of my early years, she raised me all by herself. Being a boy, of course I always wanted a father. I can remember at an early age praying to God that he would give me a father.
Psalm 68:5-6 says Father to the fatherless, defender of widows— this is God, whose dwelling is holy. God places the lonely in families; he sets the prisoners free and gives them joy… Psalm 139:13-16 says For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
These two verses over the past couple of years have really stood out to me and spoken to me about our relationship with our heavenly Father. It speaks to me of a God who wants to be our father, who desires to “adopt” us into His family.
Our heavenly Father did adopt me into His family in seventh grade, and amazingly enough my mom got married to my step father that same year. Several months later he also adopted me as his very own. In the process of a very short amount of time, I experienced 2 adoptions, one earthly and one heavenly. So it shouldn’t be much shock to come to know that I have a huge desire to work with kids without parents, orphaned kids. To not only work in an orphanage setting, but to be able to introduce them and tell them about their heavenly Father. A Father who has been with them from the beginning, who will not leave them or forsake them. A Father that knows these kids were created for a purpose, a purpose to live a life devoted to Him.
Now, don’t let me over exaggerate my childhood. I had a mom who never once made me think I was a mistake or a regret. She raised me and loved me as if she had always planned for my life. I had a set of grandparents who were always there for me when my mom needed any help and loved me as if I was there on. I had a step dad who adopted me as his own and never once treated me as if I was not and became my earthly father. And I have an eternal Father who knit me together in my mothers womb, who loves me enough to send His son Jesus to die on the Cross for my and our sins. I don’t believe that God causes all the hurts in our life, but I do believe He refuses to waste any of them. He wants to use our hurts and how He redeemed them to further His Kingdom. James 1:27 is one of my favorite verses :Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. (James 1:27 NIV)
